The power of challenges

Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning  – “Benjamin Franklin”

Whether you realise it or not, your brain and your body want to be challenged constantly. Without anything to challenge us we would have no reason to get out of bed in the morning. It could be work-related, it could be the challenge of bringing your kids up as you see fit or it could be health and fitness related.

If you have been doing CrossFit for a few years then you will likely have done almost a thousand workouts. Which ones do you actually remember? I bet you would have to think hard about the workout you did last week but I think you may remember some of the CrossFit Open workouts. If you have run a marathon then I’m sure you remember that.

What I’m getting at here is that you tend to remember the workouts or events that really challenged you. The ones that had a build up, the ones you knew were coming and the ones that you probably trained for. You also probably gave that extra 10 or 20% in these workouts too.

I like to call these things challenges. Something that you set for yourself to keep you extra motivated to train and to create a memory.

There are lots of different types of challenges you can do. Some will appeal to you and some won’t. It doesn’t matter what they are but they should be a little bit crazy, for you! You need to have a challenge that makes you question its possibility. It should make you a little bit worried. Otherwise, it will not be something you remember for very long.

It could be a solo event (these are more mentally challenging), a team event or an organised event such as an Ironman. Again, this doesn’t matter, as long as it makes you feel a little uncomfortable thinking about it.

At Defy Functional Fitness, I want to create as many of these challenges as possible. I want our members to create a memory that lasts a lifetime. I want them to be able to tell their grandchildren about the time they did something crazy. All of these will, of course, be completely optional but at some point, I hope everyone gets involved in some way.

The first of these challenges will be on our Grand Opening Day, on the 12th January 2019. It will be either a 50km row or 100km bike on the Concept2 machines. This can be done as an individual, a pair or as a team of 3. Anyone can join.

There will be many other challenges in 2019 so watch out for some of them and see if you can create that memory.
