Full Throttle

As the year comes to an end and the start of a new decade is approaching us, people will inevitably start thinking about their resolutions. If it’s worth starting then you should start it right now, today, this instant!

January 6th, 2020 seems to be the day everyone is waiting for at the moment. It’s the first Monday of the year so obviously the best time to start, right?

Well, I’ll leave you to figure that one out yourself. What I want to talk about is how to get started and what you should do. I’m going to relate it mainly to fitness but it can be applied to whatever you want to achieve this year.

Let’s think about an airplane going down a runway. For the plane to leave the ground and get into the air, the pilot needs to give it Full Throttle. All the power from the engines is needed to gain enough speed so air can flow rapidly over the wings, down to the ground and create lift.

Once the plane is in the air and at the right altitude, the pilot will back off the throttle so the plane can cruise towards its destination. If full throttle was kept on, likely the engines would burn out or use too much fuel.

Now let’s imagine the pilot only gave 75% throttle and tried to save some fuel when going down the runway. There would never be enough speed gained to create lift. The runway could be endless and the plane would still never take off. By the time the fuel in the plane ran out, it would’ve never left the ground.

Starting a new goal is just like being at the begging of a runway. You NEED to go Full Throttle at the begging to gain enough momentum to be able to back off a bit in the future.

Most people come to see me because they want to look better and feel better. It could be fat loss, muscle gain or to get stronger. It doesn’t matter what the goal is, you need to be Full Throttle committed at the beginning.

The beginning is hard, like really hard, and that’s why most people fail. Let’s say you start going to the gym once per week. Depending on your goals and where you are starting from, I would bet that you could do this once per week for the rest of your life and NEVER achieve the goals you desire. Could you go to work once per week and earn enough to live? If you can, you get this because you went Full Throttle at one point and are now in cruise mode!

You have to work hard at the beginning. To make a change to your health and fitness you need to be committed. Nutrition, sleep and training all need to be prioritized. When you have achieved your goal (your altitude) you can enter cruise mode. This doesn’t mean you stop everything. If you turned the engines of the plane would crash. It means you can take a vacation and enjoy it. The truly dedicated will still sweat a couple of times to keep the momentum going but things won’t come crashing down.
