What Goes On Your Body, Goes In Your Body!

Darren recently sent me a link for men’s skin care and asked “is this good?” And while it was marketed as “natural”, on close look it contained some stuff I wouldn’t want my husband putting on his skin daily.

It got me thinking more about the importance of what we put on our skin/hair. It’s absorbed into our systems not unlike food and medications just a different route of entry. As an MD/nutritionist I educate people mainly about what to put in their bodies. Although, I am very passionate about the notion that what we put on our bodies is also important. Most of the products found in drug stores are filled with harmful chemicals. Even those that are marketed to be natural.

Using natural personal care products can be important for several reasons, as they may offer benefits for your health, the environment, and ethical considerations. Here are some reasons why it’s worth considering a switch to natural personal care products and how to overhaul your current regime:

Reduced Exposure to Harmful Chemicals:

  • Conventional personal care products often contain synthetic chemicals, fragrances, and preservatives that may have adverse effects on your health. Natural products, on the other hand, use ingredients derived from nature, reducing your exposure to potentially harmful substances.

Environmentally Friendly:

  • Natural personal care products are often produced using sustainable and eco-friendly practices. The ingredients are typically biodegradable, reducing the environmental impact compared to synthetic counterparts that may contain harsh chemicals and contribute to pollution.

Ethical Considerations:

  • Many natural personal care product brands are committed to cruelty-free practices, meaning they do not test their products on animals. This aligns with ethical considerations for those who prefer products that are not tested on animals.

Avoiding Skin Sensitivities:

  • Natural ingredients are generally gentler on the skin, making them suitable for individuals with sensitive skin or allergies. Harsh chemicals in conventional products can lead to irritation, redness, or allergic reactions.

Supporting Sustainable Practices:

  • Choosing natural products often supports sustainable farming practices, fair trade, and ethical sourcing of ingredients. This contributes to a more sustainable and socially responsible industry.

To overhaul your current personal care regime and transition to natural products:

Educate Yourself:

  • Learn about common harmful ingredients found in conventional personal care products. Here’s a short list that I look for:
  • Parabens: Used as preservatives, parabens can mimic estrogen in the body and have been linked to hormonal disruption. Common types include methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben.
  • Sulfates (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate)These are foaming agents often found in shampoos, cleansers, and body washes. Sulfates can be harsh on the skin and may cause irritation, especially for those with sensitive skin.
  • Phthalates: Used to enhance the fragrance in many products, phthalates have been associated with endocrine disruption and may have adverse effects on reproductive health.
  • Synthetic Fragrances: The term “fragrance” or “parfum” on ingredient lists can represent a mixture of various chemicals, some of which may be allergenic or irritating. Manufacturers are not required to disclose specific fragrance ingredients.
  • Formaldehyde and Formaldehyde-Releasing Preservatives: These are used as preservatives in some skincare and hair care products. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen and may cause skin irritation.
  • Mineral Oil/Petroleum Jelly: Derived from petroleum, these ingredients can create a barrier on the skin, but they may also be contaminated with impurities. Some people prefer plant-based oils as alternatives.
  • Triclosan: Often used in antibacterial soaps and sanitizers, triclosan has been linked to antibiotic resistance and may disrupt the endocrine system.
  • Oxybenzone and Octinoxate: Common ingredients in chemical sunscreens, oxybenzone, and octinoxate have been associated with hormone disruption and environmental concerns. Some prefer physical sunscreens with ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.
  • Propylene Glycol: Found in many skincare products, propylene glycol can cause skin irritation and may be a concern for individuals with sensitive skin.
  • Ethanolamines (DEA, MEA, TEA): Used as emulsifiers and pH adjusters, these chemicals can react with other ingredients to form potentially harmful compounds. They may also cause skin and eye irritation.
  • Toluene: Often found in nail polishes and hair dyes, toluene is a solvent that may have adverse effects on the nervous system.

Read Labels:

  • Take the time to read product labels. Look for products that contain natural and organic ingredients. Be cautious of terms like “fragrance” or “parfum,” as these can hide a variety of synthetic chemicals.

Start Gradually:

  • Transitioning to a natural personal care routine doesn’t have to be abrupt. Start by replacing one product at a time. For example, switch your shampoo or body wash first, then move on to other items.

DIY Options:

  • Consider making some of your personal care products at home. Simple items like facial masks, scrubs, or hair treatments can be made using natural ingredients like honey, coconut oil, and essential oils. I’ve made soap before and it’s actually quite easy and satisfying. Check up this link.

Explore Trusted Brands:

  • Look for reputable brands that prioritize natural and organic ingredients. Research and read reviews to ensure that the products meet your standards. I like this brand for shampoo and conditioner. And I love this brand of skin care. It’s also Canadian!

Consult Professionals:

  • If you have specific skin concerns or conditions, consult with dermatologists or skincare professionals. They can provide guidance on suitable natural products for your skin type.

Remember that everyone’s skin is different, so what works for one person may not work for another. It’s essential to find products that suit your individual needs and preferences while aligning with your values. Have questions? Need some help knowing where to start, as always, I am happy to help.
