Our Three Pillars: Community

I meet with every potential new member for what we call a No Sweat Intro. This is where I can get to know their goals and introduce them to what we do at Defy. Getting stronger, losing some weight are pretty common goals. I’ve had nobody tell me that they are looking for a community to join…

And that’s probably because they are used to a normal gym where nobody speaks to each other and everyone is doing their own things. It’s also because they don’t realise that they actually need a community to help them to be successful on their fitness journey.

Community is the second pillar that Defy was built on. This is because we see how powerful being a part of the right community can be. When you find ‘your kind of people’ it’s easier to be yourself and get pulled in the right direction.

Our species has always been community driven. We depended on our tribe to survive. The survival need for communities has gone in the modern world but the human need for it is still there.

Being a part of the right community will help you be more successful. A gym like ours is full of people that are trying to achieve similar goals as you are. It is said that you’re influenced by the 5 people you spend the most time with – spending time with people who prioritise their fitness will have an impact on you for the better.

Building a community isn’t easy. To do so, you have to get people together. We have many social events throughout the year, most of them are fitness related but some are just fun gatherings. The people who attend these are the people who are the most successful on their journey – the most consistent and make the most progress.

It is no coincidence that spending more time around the people that are trying to do what you want to do – results in you getting there quicker.

Whatever your goals are, make finding the right community one of them. Similar interests, similar jobs maybe or even age demographics. When you find a place that you ‘fit it’ then you’ll have a place for life where you’ll be able to achieve those goals.

You’ll make friends. We have many groups of people who spend time together outside of the gym and have built great friendships. These people will cheer for you and celebrate your success with you. Building new friendships later in life isn’t as easy, but when your in the right community it is!
