Ok, but why do you need to track your training?
Well, the simple most obvious answer is that you do not know if your making progress if your not measuring it in some way!
And here’s the thing – I’m not a fan of using or needing motivation to enable you to be consistent with your goals. Motivation isn’t a real enough thing to keep you going all the time, but it is motivating to see your progress, so let’s make sure we capture it!
We are big on getting as many data points as possible at Defy and along with that we always have a structured program that allows us to measure each workout and make small progressions weekly. 1% better each week would equate to 67% at the end of the year! Small consistent progress goes a long way.
At the end of each class we record all the times and the weights of all the members so that we can use them for the next class when we are doing similar movements/workouts. Unless your a die hard gym rat who dreams about training, you’re unlikely to remember what you lifted a couple of weeks ago unless you’ve recorded it somewhere
But I just want to lose weight, why do I need to track my training?
Great question! Of course, the things you track should always be relatable to YOUR goals. We do an InBody scan with all new members so we can get some accurate data on muscle mass and body fat amounts. Losing weight is the goal, but we want to be losing body fat and keeping/gaining muscle – trust me, your 80 year old self will thank you.
Even though weight loss is the goal, who doesn’t enjoy getting stronger, lifting more weight and unlocking new abilities like pull ups? Of course, everyone loves that – it’s fun, empowering and when we focus on those metrics, the weight loss can follow…
You don’t usually gain body fat when your lifting heavier, running faster and doing more pull ups. So tracking your training and seeing progress inside the gym will be motivating, which will keep you showing up for longer, which will get you to your actual goal quicker. 1+1=3 or something like that!
And if your goal if to get stronger – then it’s a no brainer that your going to be tracking your training!!!
My biggest pet peeve with most franchise fitness is that it is so random, so chaotic and there’s no measurement of progress. You have to test and re-test to get that data.
So yeah, you need to track your training. Most people don’t have time for that so we do it for our members!
