Who is our Youth Training Program for?

In previous articles, I’ve often referred to participants in our programs as “athletes.” But let’s take a second to break that down—what does it really mean to be an athlete? By definition, an athlete is “an individual who regularly engages in physical activity and often competes in organized sports.”

That last part—competition—is where some people might start to check out. “Well, I’m not on a team, so this isn’t for me.” Or “I just want to be fitter, not compete.” But here’s the thing: training isn’t just for people who play sports. It’s for anyone who wants to be better. Stronger. More capable. More resilient.

Yes, a lot of the research in exercise science is centered around professional and amateur athletes. Why? Because they’re the easiest group to study. They train regularly, they have clear performance metrics, and they’re more likely to volunteer for studies. It’s great for researchers, great for the athletes (who get measurable data to improve their performance), and great for the rest of us—because we get to see what’s possible and learn what’s effective.

But this doesn’t mean training is exclusive to athletes. Just like with adults, structured training is for everyone. Strength and conditioning isn’t just about winning games or setting records; it’s about preparing yourself for life. I started seriously training when I was twelve—not because I was on a sports team, but because I wanted to be stronger, more capable, and more confident. And that’s exactly what it gave me.

The Defy Youth Program is built on that same principle. Sure, it’s a game-changer for young athletes looking to excel in their sports, but it’s equally valuable for any young person who wants to build strength, confidence, and resilience. Training doesn’t just shape your body—it sharpens your mind, builds discipline, and teaches you how to overcome challenges.

Every young person, whether they’re on a team or not, deserves the opportunity to build a stronger, healthier future. Training isn’t just for athletes. It’s for anyone who wants to be ready for whatever life throws at them.

So, who is our youth training program for?

It’s for everyone.
