Training and Vacations!

Here’s the deal, if you want to make life changing results then you need to adapt the “fitness is a lifestyle” mindset. That means that you still hit your workouts when your on vacation (it’s ok, take a seat – I’ll explain).

The typical yearly holidays could be; 2 weeks at Christmas, 1 week at Easter & 2 weeks at summer. This could be more or less but let’s use these numbers.

If you train 3x per week that gives you a maximum of 156 workouts in a year. Take the above 5 weeks off and you have a maximum of 141 workouts. That’s 141 hours dedicated to the most important thing you can possibly have; you’re health and fitness. Try doing your job for only 141 hours and see how far you get!

And this is assuming you don’t miss any sessions in the other weeks – I’m sure you get my point now. This is not enough!

I believe people should workout a minimum of 3x per week and be active the other 4 days through walks, bikes, sports etc. This is enough to be healthy. You won’t break any records but it’s enough to feel good and this probably puts you in the top 10% of the population.

So when you go on vacation you need to keep it up!

Here are some simple ways to stay active whilst on holiday:

  1. Walk around the airport instead of sitting at the gate
  2. Explore the area immediately off the plane – I like to go for an easy run to look around the area and combat the fact I’ve been sitting for a while
  3. Do multiple 10min workouts throughout the day – takes no time, get’s the HR up and you’ll feel great
  4. Use the hotel gym – some people need the “gym setting” to feel like they can workout properly
  5. Rent bikes, canoes, kayaks etc – do something different and use your fitness

You are not “extreme” if you do any of these. These are just basics to keep your body and mind healthy. If you like to indulge on food & drink then it’s likely you come back from your ‘vacation’ feeling worse than when you went.
