Strongman is the sport of lifting odd, often heavy, objects in a variety of different ways! It was popularized in the 19th century and mainly done by freakishly strong circus performers. Nowadays we have the formalized sport where the World’s Strongest Man and Woman are crowned each year.
On August 11th we will be hosting a Strongman training day which is open to both members and non-members. Read on to see if it is something you’d be interested in.
As a functional fitness facility, strongman training plays into our philosophy very well. Lifting odd objects and moving them can easily translate to moving house or is very job specific for a construction worker. It’s also very fun and keeps training interesting.
In our regular program we include things like sleds, sandbags and carries of various objects.
Strongman training offers a variety of benefits, including:
- Functional Strength: It emphasizes real-world strength and functional movements, helping improve everyday physical tasks.
- Muscular Development: Engages multiple muscle groups, leading to overall muscle growth and strength gains.
- Cardiovascular Health: Many strongman exercises, like tire flips and farmer’s walks, are high-intensity and boost cardiovascular fitness.
- Increased Power: Improves explosive power and speed, beneficial for various sports and activities.
- Core Strength: Many lifts and carries require a strong core, leading to improved core stability and strength.
- Mental Toughness: The challenging nature of strongman training builds mental resilience and perseverance.
- Variety and Fun: The diverse and unconventional exercises keep training interesting and can enhance motivation.
As I mentioned, on August 11th at 8am we will be hosting a strongman morning. This will last around three hours and will cover some of the specific movements that we don’t see as often in our regular program.
Participants will learn:
- How to use the Yoke and test their carry distance relative to their bodyweight
- Load up the farmers handles and carry for distance
- Correctly lift heavy sandbags and lift them over objects
- One arm lift heavy DBs safely
- Use the axle bar and learn various lifts and the benefits of it
If this sounds like something you would be interested in learning then email info@defytoronto.com to reserve a spot. The cost is $50+HST
Look forward to lifting with you all.
