Nothing has really changed

Social media, over the last few days, has been filled with statements about 2020 ending. Many people are glad to see the back of 2020 that’s for sure but, nothing has realy changed!

You’re still the same person as you were yesterday…

It’s still the same week as it was yesterday…

And you’ll probably still date cheques (if you write them) with 2020 for a few weeks.

We are still in a pandemic, we are still in a lockdown (here in Toronto) and we still have the same things to deal with, on a personal level, that we had last year.

As people, we like the idea of fresh starts. A new year offers the chance to set resolutions, leave the tough times of 2020 behind and hopefully have a better year.

This is great if you actually have a plan. Like I said, you’re still the same person as you were last year (yesterday) and the fact we are now in 2021 isn’t going to magically stop you from drinking too much, snacking on less than ideal food or get you to do more workouts. You’re mental resilience is still the same and your willpower may carry you for a couple of weeks, if you’re lucky, but you’ll likely be in the same position after that.

To make a long lasting change you need to:

  1. Really want it – I know people who smoke. I know people who drink too much. I know people who don’t work out as often as they know they should. All these people would agree some of their choices don’t support their goals, yet they still do them. It’s really difficult to control your wants and desires. We naturally seek comforts or things that make us feel good. You need to be true to yourself in how much you actually want to make a change.
  2. Start small – I recommend reading Atomic Habits by James Clear to anyone who has a desire to change some part of their life. The power of small habits performed over long periods of time is priceless. Simply waking up and drinking water every day is enough for some people to lose body fat and feel more energised. Do not try to change everything at once. It simply will not work over a long period of time.
  3. Environment is key – Getting a suntan in Toronto right now is impossible. Head to the Bahamas and you’ll have to use sunscreen so you don’t burn. Being in the right environment is key to being successful at anything. If your spouse or your friends aren’t supportive of any changes you plan on making, it will be more difficult (read: not impossible) to be successful. Simply changing your environment to promote the habits you want to build will make a huge difference. Emptying your house of processed foods and deleting any food ordering apps will make it more difficult for you to eat that kind of food. Look around at your environment (home, friends, family, work) and see what you can change.
  4. Mentality – Don’t expect results overnight. Things take time. If a health kick is what you’re looking for then focus on the day to day activities that will add up to big changes over time. Not every day will be perfect but having the correct mentality around this can keep you on the right track.

If you know me then know I’m not a fan of new years resolutions. You can set goals for yourself at any time of the year, any month and start any day of the week. If you have been waiting for 2020 to end because it’s been a terrible year then you have already missed out BUT you can learn from that and get going straight away.

It’s now January 2021 but nothing has really changed – take control if YOU want to make a change!
