Just Do It!

This iconic slogan from Nike could quite possibly be one if the best in the fitness industry. Someone said ‘Let’s do it’ at the end of a meeting discussing Nike’s advertising strategy in 1988, and the slogan was born!

How many people do you know or how many times have you said: “I’ll start on Monday?”

For some reason, Monday is the start of everything. Even when a New Years Resolution is started, people still like to wait until the next Monday to actually start.

Why?

It’s a delay tactic, its procrastination!

Procrastination is simply putting something off because of the pain associated with doing that thing. We choose what we do and do not do based on pain or pleasure. If it will feel good we are likely to do it without question but if there’s pain associated with the task, we may delay it.

Everyone knows they should lead a healthy life and exercise, but that thought often comes with some pain associated with it. That’s why people put off joining a new gym or starting a ‘diet’ until Monday (or worse – January). Getting into a gym routine can be difficult and for some, a drastic lifestyle change may be needed. The majority aren’t going to do this.

The ones who come and make the change have lived with the ‘pain’ of being overweight or unhealthy for too long. The new gym routine is less painful than staying on the path they are on.

I often find myself procrastinating if I have a tough workout that day. But the emotional pain of going home and not getting it done is greater for me than the physical pain of the workout. Some people ‘cherry pick’ certain workouts. For them, the physical pain of that workout is far greater.

The power of now!

You never regret doing something that you wanted to accomplish. I’ve never heard anyone say “I wish I didn’t lose that 30lbs of extra fat I had.” When you get to your goal, the pain along the way isn’t what you’re thinking about.

My advice is Just Do It. It doesn’t matter what day of the week it is. It doesn’t matter what time it is: You want to get fitter – do 30 burpees now – no I mean now, stop reading and do them.

Go and join that gym, start prepping your food at home, go to bed earlier, read more books… whatever it is that’s on your mind if it will help you Get Better At Life, go and do it!

Don’t wait until Monday
