Earned Confidence

There is a concept I like called “Earned Confidence”

We all have it in some form and it is what makes us good at what we are good at.

It is a simple theory – you need to earn your confidence.

I remember the first time I coached a CrossFit class. I had been coaching a few 1-1 sessions and had just taken my CrossFit Level 1 course. There were about 15-20 members in the class and it was in a gym that had been established for a few years. It felt like chaos (if only in my head).

I wasn’t confident in my coaching abilities even though I was well prepared theoretically. I wasn’t confident that people would listen to my cues and coaching even though I knew I had some ideas that could help them.

Coaching isn’t about knowledge (of course, you need this) or the ability to do something yourself. It is about understanding how to meet someone where they are and take them to the place they want to be. Fitness coaching, life coaching or business coaching – coaching is about taking people to the next level and beyond, and it takes practice.

I wasn’t confident because I hadn’t earned my confidence. I hadn’t put in the hours, failed a bunch of times and gained the experience needed to be fully confident. I’m now confident I could walk into any gym, work with any athlete and help them improve their performance.

Why is someone nervous when walking into a CrossFit gym for the first time? They have no confidence. They don’t know what a snatch is or how to do a burpee without feeling like they are going to pass out. That confidence needs to be earned. As they get fitter and stronger, it is no longer nerve-racking and can be an enjoyable experience.

Presenting in front of a group of people is not everyone’s favorite thing to do. I’ve seen people start sweating, lose their voices and almost hide behind the whiteboard they are presenting from. They didn’t earn their confidence. The speech hadn’t be rehearsed to the point they could sing it to the audience and they didn’t find coping mechanisms to deal with the stress the situation caused them.

Earn your confidence. Don’t be afraid to fail and be consistent in your pursuits to be ready for game day – whenever that may be!
